The English Language Centre (ELC) is located on the campus of The University of New England (UNE), in the northern New South Wales city of Armidale. The city offers a unique lifestyle of regional living with metropolitan resources, country surroundings with a thriving city centre and a friendly, welcoming community.

The costs of living in Armidale are generally lower than in metropolitan areas, though the region still boasts the facilities, culture and entertainment of a large city. ELC students are also able to access all of UNE's facilities, including sporting venues, vast libraries and on-campus resources.

The beautiful surroundings of the ELC add to the unique living and learning experience on offer to students. A wildlife reserve full of kangaroos and deer is literally outside the front doors of the centre!

English language courses are conducted for 45 weeks per year, over academic terms and summer breaks. The ELC is a centre for the globally recognised International English Language Testing System (IELTS), with tests conducted on site regularly throughout the year.

The English Language Centre also offers students English language pathways to tertiary study at The University of New England. Placement in a course at UNE is guaranteed for academically qualified ELC students who reach the required English language entry level.

General English (GE)
CRICOS Course Code 018622M

The General English course is designed for students who want to improve their communication skills in English for a broad range of purposes. This program assists students in reading, writing, listening and speaking skills, as well as giving them an understanding of Australia and Australian culture.

English for Academic Purposes Modules 1-4 (Pre-Intermediate to Advanced)
CRICOS Course Code 066996E

The English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course is aimed at students who wish to enter academic study in Australia at UNE or other universities. The EAP program helps academically qualified students to develop their English language skills in order to progress to further education, and to introduce students to the educational approaches and cultural context of studying in the Australian education system.

Introductory Academic Program (IAP)
CRICOS Course Code 056061B

The Introductory Academic Program (IAP) is designed for students who are intending to study in an Australian university for the first time, or for students who wish to update their study skills and English language skills prior to commencing undergraduate or postgraduate study.

Students who attend the ELC are welcomed with an orientation, to help them settle into their new surroundings; students also undertake a short placement test to ensure that they are taught at a level suitable for their proficiency level and learning purpose.

UNE International Services offers a free airport pick-up service at the Armidale terminal, and can provide travel advice to all international students as well as:

  • Accommodation options
  • General course advice and administration
  • Scholarships and research grants advice
  • Family support advice including schooling, child care and work permits
  • Welfare support for a wide range of matters
  • Visa information and advice

The ELC is nationally accredited by NEAS Australia, and is an English Australia Member College, as well as being a nationally accredited IELTS testing centre with IELTS tests being conducted regularly on-campus.

There are a range of accommodation options available to ELC students both on-campus and in the city of Armidale. Many ELC students choose to live in Homestay with a local family, as this gives them a chance to experience Australian life as well as improve their English - ELC staff find that students who stay in Homestay accommodation are often much more advanced in their English speaking and listening than other students.
